CHAPTER 7: POWER OUTAGE

CHANEL

Chanel knew she was in serious trouble the moment Decker’s hard mouth brushed hers and immediately gentled. Actually, way down deep, she’d long since suspected that her heart was in serious trouble where Decker Kingston was concerned.

And now it was more than a suspicion.

The way his lips plundered hers told her everything he’d been hiding behind his avalanche of criticism and sarcasm. He’d never seen her as simply a competitor on the campaign trail. He didn’t just think she was beautiful. He seriously cared for her. The deep and raging kind of serious that could lead to more things.

Like love.

No man had ever kissed her like this. It was like being caught in the eye of a storm. The fervor of emotion threatened to swallow her whole. It was so powerful that it brought the sting of tears to her eyes.

Decker abruptly raised his head. “Are you okay?” He gazed anxiously down at her.

She smiled, or tried to. Her lips trembled from the effort. “This wasn’t supposed to happen between us.”

“I know.” Looking a little agonized, he leaned in to press his cheek against her damp one and silently held her. Just held her. After what they’d just shared, his control was impressive. As if she needed one more thing to be impressed about with him!

She closed her damp lashes, reveling in the scrape of his evening shadow against her chin and jawline. “I guess there’s no law that says we have to make a big deal out of this,” she quavered. “It was just one kiss, right?”

“Just one kiss, huh?” He raised his head, smirking in pure male satisfaction at her. “Babe, the floor is still shaking beneath my boots.”

Babe! He called me babe. Melting beneath the look in his eyes, she tugged his head back to hers for another kiss.

He stopped a fraction of an inch away from her lips. “Careful, councilwoman. If we keep this up, you won’t be able to call it just one kiss for much longer.”

“Fine. Just two kisses, then.”

When he gave her what she wanted, she whispered, “Now make it three.”

The first whistle of wind slammed into the north side of the cabin, alerting her to the fact that the storm had arrived even earlier than the forecast predicted.

She tensed in his arms. “You should probably head back to your cabin before it gets any worse.”

“Aw! Are you worried about me, Miss Remington?” His voice was both husky and teasing.

She reluctantly unwound her arms from his neck. Then she rested her hands on his shoulders, not quite ready to let go of him. “I can’t tell you all my secrets in one evening. You’d get bored with me and start hunting for the next council member to harass.”

He snorted. “You’ve made me mad enough to want to punch walls a few times, but I can honestly say I’ve never been bored around you.”

“Gosh! You say the sweetest things to me,” she mocked.

He leaned in to nuzzle her earlobe. “Whatever I’ve said earned me the best kisses I’ve ever had.
